Undergraduate Teaching

Undergraduate Teaching

Founded in 1983, the College's Paris program is our oldest for study abroad, and almost half of all such work by our students has taken place in France. The University of Chicago Center in Paris promises a first-rate learning facility for its participants at all levels doubling ten-week (quarter) and year-long undergraduate engagement with French culture and intellectual life.

The Chicago Center in Paris is the site of academic programs on two undergraduate levels:

  1. An undergraduate program entirely in the French language, which has already been in existence in Paris for fifteen years. The 20-25 enrolled students spend the entire academic year in Paris and take courses in various Parisian institutions. In addition, they enroll in support tutorials taught by native French instructors, young teachers and scholars who are pursuing their graduate degrees. The Center will provide a year-long, in-depth course in French language and civilization for these 20-25 students, and it will be taught by a native French instructor.

  2. An undergraduate program taught in English, of which the majority of instruction would take place at the Center. The 40-60 enrolled students would spend one ten-week quarter in Paris in groups of 12-20. We are exploring with our French colleagues the possibility of joint enrollments of Chicago and French university students in these courses. The courses would be drawn from a range of subjects, including economics, political science, and French history. These courses would be staffed by University of Chicago faculty or academic colleagues from such Parisian institutions as the University of Paris-Dauphine and Sciences Po. In some cases, French faculty may be invited to do a further stint of teaching at the University of Chicago (if practical arrangements can be worked out between the faculty member in Paris and the course organizer in Chicago).
